Midjourney V7 review: the gold standard gets smarter.
What Midjourney is — and who it's for.
Midjourney is, quite simply, the most aesthetically accomplished AI image generator available in 2026. Founded by David Holz and built by a team of around 60 people, it has maintained its position at the top of the quality hierarchy since its launch in 2022. However, it has done so by following an unconventional path — no API, no free tier, and a workflow that still runs partly through Discord.
With the release of V7, Midjourney made its most significant leap forward. The model is smarter with prompts, more coherent on fine details, and introduces features like Draft Mode and built-in personalization that fundamentally change the production workflow. As a result, it's now a more practical tool for brand work, not just a playground for stunning one-off images.
We've used Midjourney extensively across brand campaigns, art direction exploration, and editorial content production. This review reflects that hands-on experience, specifically through the lens of professional visual production.
V7: what actually changed.
Image quality and coherence
The quality ceiling in V7 is the highest we've seen from any AI image generator. Textures feel physically plausible — fabric drapes correctly, skin has pore-level detail without the “plastic” look, and lighting behaves like it would in a real photographic environment. Furthermore, the model handles complex scenes with multiple subjects far more reliably than V6, which would frequently drop secondary elements or produce anatomical errors.
In particular, the improvement in hands, eyes, and reflections is dramatic. These were V6's most visible failure points, and V7 addresses them convincingly. For brand photography work, this means fewer rejected generations and less post-production correction.
Draft Mode
Draft Mode is arguably V7's most important feature for professional workflows. It generates images at 10 times the speed and half the cost of standard mode. The output is lower resolution, but it's more than sufficient for concept exploration and art direction iteration.
In practice, we use Draft Mode to rapidly explore 20–30 directions before committing to full-quality generation. Consequently, the creative exploration phase that used to burn through GPU hours now costs almost nothing. When a direction works, you simply enhance or vary at full quality. Additionally, Draft Mode enables conversational and voice-based prompting on the web interface — a genuinely novel interaction model.
Personalization
V7 is the first Midjourney model with personalization turned on by default. After a brief setup (rating image pairs for about five minutes), the model learns your aesthetic preferences and applies them to every generation. In other words, two users typing the same prompt will get meaningfully different results based on their personal style profile.
For brand work, this is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it raises the baseline quality of output because the model understands what you find visually appealing. On the other hand, it introduces a variable that can subtly shift across team members. Therefore, we recommend building explicit prompt architecture rather than relying on personalization alone for brand consistency. Our guide on maintaining brand consistency with AI covers this in detail.
Style and character references
The --sref (style reference) and --cref (character reference) parameters remain Midjourney's strongest consistency tools. By attaching reference images, you can anchor generations to a specific visual language. V7 handles these references more intelligently than V6 — better preserving subject identity while allowing stylistic transformation.
However, these tools have limitations for volume production. You can't build reusable node-based workflows like in Freepik Spaces, and there's no equivalent to Flora AI's Style DNA feature that systematically learns from a brand's visual library. For individual hero images and editorial content, Midjourney's references are exceptional. For 200-image catalogue campaigns, they require more manual discipline.
Pricing in 2026.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Fast GPU hours | Key features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $8 | 3.3h | ~200 images/month. No Relax Mode. |
| Standard | $30 | $24 | 15h | Unlimited Relax Mode. Best value for regular use. |
| Pro | $60 | $48 | 30h | Stealth Mode (private generations). Required for companies >$1M revenue. |
| Mega | $120 | $96 | 60h | Maximum throughput. 12 concurrent fast jobs. |
The Standard plan at $30/month offers the best value for most professional users. Unlimited Relax Mode means you can generate thousands of images for iteration and exploration, then reserve Fast hours for final delivery. For agencies handling confidential client work, the Pro plan's Stealth Mode is essential — otherwise, all generations appear in Midjourney's public gallery.
Compared to other platforms, Midjourney's pricing is competitive. Freepik Spaces Premium+ costs €36/month for unlimited fast generations across multiple models. Flora AI Pro is $16/month. Higgsfield starts at $9/month. However, Midjourney's quality ceiling justifies the premium for work where aesthetic excellence is the priority. For a broader cost perspective, see our guide on AI visual production costs.
Where Midjourney excels.
Aesthetic quality. No other AI generator matches Midjourney's visual output. The images have a quality of light, texture, and composition that reads as authored rather than generated. This matters enormously for brands where visual sophistication is a competitive advantage.
Editorial and campaign concepts. For art direction exploration — testing moods, colour palettes, compositional approaches, and visual narratives — Midjourney is unmatched. Draft Mode makes this exploration nearly free, which is transformative for creative workflows.
Prompt interpretation. V7 understands complex, multi-element prompts far better than any previous version. You can describe a nuanced scene with specific lighting, atmosphere, and compositional requirements, and the model delivers remarkably close to the brief. Consequently, fewer iterations are needed to reach the desired output.
Photorealism with character. Using --style raw, V7 produces images that look like unedited RAW files from a high-end camera. This is particularly valuable for brand photography where the goal is credible realism rather than stylized illustration.
Where Midjourney falls short.
No API. This is the single biggest limitation for professional production. As of March 2026, Midjourney offers no official public API. Every image must be generated through the web interface or Discord. As a result, you cannot integrate Midjourney into automated production pipelines, batch processing workflows, or custom client-facing tools. For studios handling volume work, this is a significant operational bottleneck.
Batch consistency at scale. While style references and personalization help, Midjourney lacks the systematic consistency tools that node-based platforms offer. There's no reusable workflow system, no style presets that lock across batches, and no team collaboration features. Consequently, maintaining consistency across 100+ images requires strict prompt discipline and manual quality control.
No free tier. Midjourney requires a paid subscription with no trial option. For brands evaluating AI tools, this creates a barrier to entry. In contrast, Flora AI offers 1,000 free credits, and Freepik Spaces has a free Essential tier.
Text rendering. Despite improvements, V7 still struggles with text in images. If your brand visuals require integrated typography — product packaging mockups, poster designs, or social content with text overlays — you'll need post-production intervention. DALL-E 3 remains stronger in this specific area.
Editing limitations. Inpainting, retexturing, and upscaling still fall back to V6 models. This means the post-generation editing workflow doesn't yet match V7's generation quality. Midjourney has committed to updating these, but as of now, it's a gap.

Common questions about Midjourney.
Yes, especially with V7. The combination of style references, personalization profiles, and raw mode produces photorealistic output that rivals traditional photography. However, maintaining brand consistency across large batches requires prompt architecture discipline — the tool alone won't guarantee coherent campaigns without art direction. Learn how we maintain brand consistency.
Four plans: Basic at $10/month, Standard at $30, Pro at $60, and Mega at $120. Annual billing saves 20%. The Standard plan offers the best value for regular professional use, with unlimited Relax Mode generations. Furthermore, companies with over $1M in annual revenue must subscribe to Pro or Mega for commercial usage.
For aesthetic quality and editorial-grade output, Midjourney consistently leads. DALL-E 3 is easier to use and better at text rendering within images. As a result, the choice depends on priorities: if visual sophistication matters most, Midjourney wins. If you need text in images or API integration, DALL-E has the edge.
V7 significantly improved this with style references, character references, and personalization. Combined with a structured prompt architecture, you can achieve strong batch consistency. That said, node-based platforms like Freepik Spaces or Flora AI offer more systematic consistency controls for high-volume production.
No. As of March 2026, there is no official public API. All generation happens through the web interface or Discord. Consequently, Midjourney cannot be integrated into automated production pipelines, which is a significant limitation for studios and agencies handling volume work.
Draft Mode generates images at 10 times the speed and half the cost of standard mode. It produces lower-resolution previews ideal for rapid iteration. In addition, it enables conversational and voice-based prompting on the web interface. When you find a direction you like, you can enhance or vary the result at full quality.
